Phius Certified Consultant (CPHC®) Program Overview

Phius Certified Consultant (CPHC®) training is the only certification that teaches students how to apply passive building principles in a cost-optimized, climate-specific manner. The training is geared toward architects, engineers and design professionals who want to take their high-performance building expertise to the next level.

About the Course

Phius Certified Consultants (CPHCs) learn to design to the Phius climate-specific building standard, the leading passive building certification in North America. Projects earning Phius Certification follow RESNET QA/QC protocols and achieve excellent HERS scores, US Department of Energy Zero Energy Ready Home status, and adhere to EPA indoor airPLUS requirements.

Training Structure Overview

  • Apply for training and certification
     
  • Upon acceptance, register for instructor-led training dates (recommend choosing dates 3-4 months out)
     
  • Complete the mandatory self-guided training (estimated 8-12 weeks)
     
  • Attend the introductory meeting (2-3 weeks before instructor-led sessions)
     
  • Complete the WUFI Passive Self-Guided training (2-3 weeks before instructor-led sessions)
     
  • Attend the instructor-led training sessions (participation is required)
     
  • Complete both parts of the two-part certification exam

Meet the CPHC Course Instructors

Prerequisites

You must apply for admission into the CPHC Training program, which also grants you access to take the CPHC Professional Exam.

The course requires a base knowledge in building science with architectural training, hands-on building experience, or similar background.

How Much Does it Cost?

The price of the training and professional exam, all in, is $2400. This includes the two-part training and two-part exam.
Members of the Phius Alliance receive a $200 discount, and must register through the Phius Portal once your application is accepted.

Incentives & Reimbursements

Massachusetts Express Grants

Massachusetts employers with 100 or fewer MA, W2 employees are eligible to receive up to 100% reimbursement in training costs via Workforce Training Fund Express Program grants. Applicants must submit a grant application at least 21 days ahead of beginning the self-guided training AND register through Built Environment Plus to be eligible for reimbursement. For CPHC training, $1,950.00 is eligible for grant funding (covers the entire course cost other than the $150 exam fee).

CPHC Training Timeline

Application

Students must apply for acceptance into the program. Upon acceptance, students can register for the full training and select from a list of scheduled live sessions.

Self Guided Training

Online, self-guided instructional modules (50-60 hours) followed by an Online Exam.

Live Sessions

Instructor-led, live session spread into eight 3-hour modules over two weeks (24 hours live + 2-4 hours for design exercise homework). These are scheduled roughly once a month, See schedule above for session slots, and be prepared to select a session slot during training registration.

Two-Part Exam

Online Exam: Open once self-guided content is complete, to be completed in a 3-hour time slot of student's choice.

Design Exam: Open for a 4-week window following the live training session, to be completed and uploaded to the training site by the specified due date.
