Curriculum

Phius Certified Rater training builds on the foundation and concepts delivered in RESNET HERS Rater training. It prepares rating professionals to identify the key components of passive building and understand best practices for testing and inspecting performance in the field.

Course Topics Include:

  • Background on building science, building enclosure systems and high performance mechanical systems
  • All requirements for the Phius Certification program, including requirements for 3rd party co-requisite programs.
  • Air-tightness testing strategies and protocol for testing for Phius Certification compliance
  • Typical designs for passive building mechanical heating, cooling and ventilation systems and corresponding testing requirements
  • Passive building hot water delivery requirements and testing strategies

Course Format

This course is delivered all-online in two parts:

Part 1: Self Paced online learning modules (roughly 8 hours)

Part 2: Live instruction delivered in three 3-hour sessions in one week (9 hours)

Prerequisites

The training is open to all who would like to participate, but there are pre-requisites to qualify to take the Phius Certified Rater Exam and earn the credential.

Typical students are RESNET HERS Raters, with experience rating single-family homes and verifying compliance with certification programs such as ENERGY STAR, DOE Zero Energy Ready Homes and EPA Indoor airPLUS. In order to work on Phius 2024 projects, raters are required to complete all ZERH training modules applicable to the ZERH Single Family V2 program specifications.
