As passive building continues its proliferation throughout the United States and beyond, the demand for Phius Certified professionals is surging. To meet this demand, an increasing number of municipalities and utility companies are offering incentives and rebates for Phius professional training courses.

You can peruse the Phius Policy Database for our comprehensive list of Phius-related policy incentives, but the focus of this blog is on Colorado. Specifically, we will lay out two significant professional training incentive programs in the state and provide details on in-person Phius trainings designed to help qualifying professionals take advantage of the incentives.

So, let’s start with what you need to know about the incentive programs. The first is offered by the City of Denver, and the second is through Xcel Energy, one of the main utility providers in Colorado. Let’s get into the details on each.

City of Denver Professional Development Rebates

The City of Denver offers a rebate for passive building training that will cover up to $2,500 of training and certification exam costs. That covers the full cost for training and certification for any of Phius’ professional credentials.

Who is eligible for the rebate?

Individuals must meet at least one of the following criteria to be eligible for the rebate:

  • Reside in Denver
  • Work for an employer situated in Denver
  • Currently enrolled in a Denver college or trade school
  • Prove that they have previously worked on at least 5 projects in Denver

Obtaining the rebate

To qualify for the rebate, individuals must apply for and be approved for the rebate prior to registering for Phius training. More information about the program, including the application and necessary documentation, are located on the City of Denver’s website.

Xcel Energy Phius Training Incentive

Xcel Energy will cover 90% of the Phius Certified Builder Training and Certification Exam costs for individuals seeking certification in its coverage area, reducing the individual’s out-of-pocket cost to just $210. While not finalized, the incentive may be extended to include Phius Certified Rater & Verifier training in the near future.

Who is eligible for the incentive?

Builders located within Xcel Energy’s service area, or who perform a significant amount of work within the service area.

Obtaining the incentive

Individuals must contact Xcel Energy by emailing Mateusz Bober at Mateusz.J.Bober@xcelenergy.com and be approved for the program. Once approved, a special registration link will be provided to the individual reducing their out-of-pocket registration cost. Learn more about the program here.

Phius Trainings Coming to Colorado

These considerable incentive programs apply to virtual and in-person trainings. Given the growing demand for high-performance passive buildings in the area, we decided to make Phius trainings as accessible as possible to Colorado residents by adding a pair of in-person training courses this year. The in-person trainings provide unparalleled immersion into the material while fostering a cohort of local practitioners that can be a valuable resource well beyond certification.

The classes we are offering are:

The incentive programs being offered in Colorado are some of the most robust in the country, making this the ideal time for residents and practitioners in the area to take advantage and elevate their expertise with Phius training.
