More Renewables, or Improved Envelope? Exploring Paths to Net-Zero Energy in Affordable Housing
When pursuing carbon neutrality for a new affordable housing development, what’s the best approach? More solar panels? An open-loop ground source heat pump system? Or improved building envelope achieved through pursuit of PHIUS+ 2018 standards? These were the questions posed by the Community Action Center of Northfield (CAC) in Minnesota as they work to construct a high quality, long-lasting affordable housing development at the forefront of modern sustainable building practices. The consultant project team will share the results of their study comparing three scenarios: achieving net-zero energy through PHIUS+ 2018 certification compared to standard construction with additional renewable energy or a geothermal system.
DOE Zero Energy Ready Home PV Ready Checklist
The checklists below provide links to guides that provide installation instructions for each measure included in the checklists.
The PV-Ready Checklist is mandatory for all Phius projects.
The solar-hot water checklist is no longer mandatory, but builders are encouraged to meet it.
On-Site PV (Photovoltaic) Production Utilization Calculator
Only applies to PHIUS+ CORE (2018) & Phius CORE 2021 projects. An estimate of coincident production-and-use of energy from on-site renewable energy systems (such as PV) may be included in the Net Source Energy calculation for Phius Certification. The amount of source energy that may be offset by a renewable electricity source depends on the utilization factor. This can be calculated by determining the coincident production-and-use fraction of the generation. If using PV without battery storage, use this calculator to determine your climate specific onsite utilization factor.
