A compilation of suggested local architectural attractions, outdoor recreation and restaurants in Phoenix for PhiusCon 2026 attendees.
Just because summer is coming to a close, that doesn't mean vacation season is ending. An early October trip to Phoenix is the perfect opportunity to soak up some sun, enjoy the local fare, visit some iconic architectural landmarks, and sharpen your building science acumen at PhiusCon 2026.
This year’s conference will run Oct. 8-10 with Pre-Conference workshops on Thursday, Oct. 8, and Core Conference Oct. 9-10. Being situated around the weekend provides the perfect opportunity for attendees to venture out and take advantage of all Phoenix has to offer. We encourage all PhiusCon attendees to do so, which is why we have put together a list of nearby attractions covering architectural must-sees, scenic outdoor recreation and of course some top local bars and eateries.
Before we get to the list though, if you haven’t booked your hotel or secured your PhiusCon ticket yet, don’t wait! Hotel rooms are limited and ticket prices will increase in a few weeks. OK, now to the fun stuff.
We are excited to offer PhiusCon attendees 15% off Taliesin West Self-Guided Audio Tours Oct. 7-11 with proof of conference ticket purchase. The complex, established by the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright in 1937, is a one-of-a-kind pilgrimage for the architecturally inclined, and it is located only about 25 miles from the PhiusCon hotel.
The home and desert laboratory is a National Historic Landmark that offers a uniquely Southwestern architectural experience.

Step back in time by visiting The Square PHX, a collection of 19th and early 20th-century buildings located only a half mile from the hotel. Included is the Rosson House Museum, a fully restored 1895 Queen Anne Victorian house that has been repurposed into a museum that chronicles the history of the Phoenix area, as well as the architecturally striking Lath House Pavilion.
The Square PHX also offers a number of shops and restaurants, making it an ideal PhiusCon excursion.
In addition to its 50,000+ plant displays, the Desert Botanical Garden (less than five miles from the hotel) includes climate-responsive building design that incorporates native stone and other natural elements that match the desert landscape.
The 140-acre garden is an ideal place to connect with the local flora and get some steps in after a day of enjoying breakout sessions and plenaries.
Perched atop an interstate tunnel, Margaret T. Hance Park offers more than 30 acres of green space in the heart of downtown Phoenix. It is located less than a mile from the hotel and offers multiple walking trails from which to explore the area.
The Japanese Friendship Garden (about one mile from the hotel) is located within Margaret T. Hance Park, providing a unique blend of Japanese garden elements with the local Sonoran Desert. Water, stones, streams and greenery create a unique, calming environment walking distance from PhiusCon.
The McDowell Mountains house a number of trailheads about 27 miles northwest of the hotel that offer fantastic views and a moderately difficult hiking experience.
Attendees looking for an authentic Arizona hiking experience should look no further than Camelback Mountain, located about 10 miles from the hotel. It features two difficult hiking trails (it’s more vertical than you think!) that ascend 1,420 feet to a summit that features striking views of the city below. Even in October, heat can be extreme there, so it’s recommended to go early in the morning.
Phoenix has no shortage of places to eat and imbibe, and we encourage attendees to check out all the city has to offer, but we’ve compiled a short list of some of our recommendations below complete with their distances from the PhiusCon hotel.
