From the location in bustling downtown Houston to the always popular Passive Projects Bus Tour and wide array of enlightening breakout sessions, there is no shortage of reasons to be excited about PhiusCon 2023. But the stars of this year’s show will undoubtedly be our trailblazing group of keynote speakers.

Members of the Fly Flat project team deliver the closing keynote at Phius' 2018 conference

Kicking things off during the Core Conference opening plenary Thursday, Nov. 9, will be members of the Houston Fly Flat project team. The Fly Flat started as a design competition entry for a group of innovative students at the Houston-based HBCU Prairie View A&M, but has since secured funding from the City of Houston and is on track to be built in one of Houston’s most underserved communities.

Five years ago, members of The Fly Flat team delivered an unforgettable closing keynote address at our conference in Boston, and their appearance this year – in their home city of Houston – will be the perfect opportunity to take attendees on the project’s journey from vision to reality. The team members who will be presenting are: Yasmine Chaney, Shannen Martin, Shelly Pottorf, Cynthia Suarez, Ledell Thomas and Nichole Thomas.

We are also proud to welcome Tom Davis of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as an opening keynote speaker. He is the Director of the Office of Recapitalization, which focuses largely on preserving affordable housing. Phius is becoming an increasingly popular option for affordable housing developers, so we look forward to strengthening that bond and educating attendees on the impact of safe, healthy, accessible housing.

Day 2 of Core Conference commences with our technical keynote presented by Hugh Crowther, VP of Engineering at Swegon North America. He will explore the importance of a consensus-based passive building standard to accelerate integration into building codes. The ASHRAE 227P Passive Building Design Standard currently under development will be at the forefront of the discussion, as it aims to provide an easily adoptable, industry approved standard for municipalities to integrate into their building codes. This is a critical step in the journey of bringing passive building practices into the mainstream, and this keynote address will examine it from all angles.

Last, but most certainly not least, is building science pioneer and PhiusCon mainstay Dr. Joe Lstiburek, who will deliver the closing keynote address. Lstiburek, the founding principal of Building Science Corporation, is one of the top voices in the high-performance building industry and has shared his expertise at PhiusCon on a number of occasions, including a wine-inspired closing keynote at PhiusCon 2021 in Tarrytown, New York. His presentation this year is titled, “Wood is Good, It Grows on Trees.” It promises to be a closing keynote that only Dr. Joe could deliver!

In addition to our keynote speakers, this year’s conference features the expo hall, PhiusCon After Party, mini keynotes, and much more! Don’t miss any of the action Nov. 7-10 in Houston. Get your ticket today!
