Resilience modeling: Case studies in New York

Presenter: Graham S. Wright, PHIUS Senior Scientist

Survivability or resilience to utility outages is the one of the touted benefits of passive building. The webinar will review the results of using dynamic modeling in WUFI Plus to verify / quantify the resilience benefit, for two residences in the New York City area - a single-family detached house and a corner apartment unit. The simulated residences were subjected to 36-hour and five-day outages at random over the whole year, to see how the inside temperature would respond to outages in all seasons. A couple of additional cases were run to compare with code-minimum construction, and to look at the response over ten years of actual weather data instead of one year of typical weather.

  1. Methods: how the internal heat gains were changed during outages.
  2. Methods: understand the assumptions about cooling by window ventilation.
  3. Notice the improvement over code-minimum construction.
  4. Understand a proposed “resilience rating”.
